President Donald Trump has picked up his education secretary Betsy DeVos from Michigan. She is a billionaire philanthropist.
Betsy DeVos is married to the scion of Amway, Dick DeVos. This family has spent heavily on right-wing causes. Since the 1970s, it has spent nearly $200 million for promoting these causes.
She has always supported vouchers for private and religious schools. She supports conservative Christian groups such as the Foundation for Traditional Values. This aims at reducing the distance between church and state. Betsy DeVos supports organizations such as Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Michigan. This promotes the privatizing of the education system.
This does not mean that she is against public schools. She basically believes that the teachers in charter schools, as well as private schools, are more geared towards leading the way to better education. This will help to prepare students better to manage in the current times by getting them away from any kind of standardization as well as testing. This is why she has given money to several public schools also.
She is a deeply devout person. She feels that education can play a key role in promoting faith in God’s Kingdom. She feels that philanthropy is not enough to fund education in America. She wants to confront the culture in a way that can help to advance the Kingdom of God. She wants churches to get more active as well as engaged in imparting education.
She wants to give parents the option to pick any public school or charter school which is in their district. For this, she would like the taxpayer money to reach private school through vouchers. Donald Trump’s education proposal has already asked for dedicating federal money amounting to $20 billion to help families in selecting charter or private schools, or religious schools.
The religious views of Betsy DeVos affect her philanthropy along with her political activism. She has donated large amounts of money to hospitals, and health research, besides arts organizations. There is an emphasis on funding several Christian schools as well as evangelical missions.
She views choice as well as competition to be the best mechanism for improving the education system of America. Her clear preference is for the Christian private schools. Betsy and Dick DeVos have already contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars towards privatizing of education and reducing this separation of church from state.
Betsy DeVos is 59 years old. She has been raised in the Christian Reformed tradition. It is important to know this in order to understand her better. Meanwhile, the entire DeVos clan is known for its political activism against any kind of organized labor. They have focused their advocacy along with philanthropy on all those legislation that require all employees to be a part of unions in workplaces. Their efforts paid off, and in 2012, this bill became law. Check this article from New York Post.
