Sheriff Joe Arpaio may have been one of the stringent men in America who carried his roles with strictness and an uncompromising attitude. He was based in Maricopa County where he supervised maintenance of law and order. He, however, would derail form his work ethics and arrogantly pursue selfish interests. The Mainstream media did overlook this character and instead focused on his stern leadership. The Phoenix New Times, all the same, choose a different course.
Mr. Arpaio’s evils frequently got exposed by the Phoenix New Times as the paper sought to bring to an end his deeds. They all boiled down to abuse of office. He would, for instance, discriminate people, foster unconstitutional detentions, mistreatment of inmates which sadly some had to pass on, unsafe health conditions in jail and his persecution procedures were totally and completely unfair and inhuman. On other counts, he had carelessly mismanaged the state office including committing deliberate financial irregularities and fraud.
Lacey and Larkin happened to be his guest at one time –though this would turn things around. Apparently, the duo was working at the Village Voice Media – Phoenix New Times. While there and in the face of the ongoing ills they wrote a whistle-blowing article that let Arpaio’s deep secrets unraveled. The fundamental issue addressed was acting out of the provisions of the constitution by biasly allowing his friends be a party to the grand jury subpoenas.
Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin got arrested, detained and tried for supposedly not maintaining county’s secrecy. They consequently got released, but the fight would still go on for media freedom and right through a lawsuit. The duo won, and the county had to compensate the damage caused as a result of Sherriff Joe Arpaio’s actions.
